2/Lieutenant Rakesh Singh

  • 2/Lieutenant Rakesh Singh was born on 18 September 1970 in chandighar.
  • His father name was Raj Singh , who retired as Colonel of the Indian Army.
  • As a young lad, Rakesh Singh decided to follow in his father’s footsteps and join the Indian Army.
  • He worked hard to achieve this aim and was commissioned in the Indian Army.
  • On 13 June 1992 in 22 Grenadiers.

2/Lieutenant Rakesh Singh’s story :-

Rakesh Singh was commissioned into 22nd battalion of Grenadiers and rose to become second lieutenant. On 5 December 1992, 22 Grenadiers was operating encounter rebellion environment in Shupian Tehsil of Pulwama District in Jammu & Kashmir. The regiment had planned an operation in the so called Pakistani Trained Mill-“”tants area.
In this Operation Lt Rakesh Singh played a very important role and single-handedly, managed to kill five of the Mujahadeen. But this young 22 years army officer died While attempting to cut off the escape of eight fleeing Afghan Mujahadeen who had been flushed out during operations, In 1993 he was awarded India’s highest peace time award, the Ashoka Chakra for his supreme sacrifice.
