1. Ashoka Chakra

The Ashoka Chakra also spelled out as Ashok Chakra, is awarded for most out-standing bravery or for some act of daring or greatest act of valour or self-sacrifice done in front of the enemy.

The First person to receive this honorable award was  Lt. Suhas Biswas, Indian officer to  awarded with the Ashoka Chakra.

2. Kirti Chakra

The Kirti Chakra is an Indian military decoration awarded for bravery, heroic action or self-sacrifice away from the field of battle. These award may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel.

This award was established in 1952.

3. Ati Vishisht Seva Medal

The AVSM is a military award of India given in recognition of legendary service of an exceptional order to all ranks of the armed forces. The award is a peacetime equivalent of Uttam Yuddh Seva Medal, which is a Wartime Distinguished Service decoration.

This award was established on 26th January, 1960.

4. Maha Vir Chakra

The Maha Vir Chakra is literally great warrior medal and is the second highest military decoration in India, after the Param Vir Chakra, which is awarded for acts of markable gallantry in the presence of the enemy, whether on land, at sea or in the air.

This award was established on 26th January, 1950. The first recipient of these award was Major Rajendra Singh Sparrow on 19th March, 1948.

5. Padma Bhusan

The Padma Bhushan award is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India, preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. This award was established on 2nd January, 1954. And later in 1999, D.C Kizhakemuri became the first recipient of these award.

6. Padma Shri

The Padma Shri award is the fourth highest civilian award in the Republic of India, after the Bharat Ratna, the Padma Vibhushan and the Padma Bhushan. It is awarded by the Government of India, every year on India’s Republic Day. This award was introduced in 1954. The first recipient of these award was Satyendra Nath Bose in 1954.

7. Padma Vibhusan

The Padma Vibhushan award is the second-highest civilian award of the Republic of India, second only to the Bharat Ratna. Which was instituted on 2nd  January 1954, this award is given for “extraordinary and out-standing service”, without any bias of race, occupation, position, or sex. he first recipient of these award was Satyendra Nath Bose in 1954.

8. Param Vir Chakra

The Param Vir Chakra is India’s highest military decoration, awarded for displaying explicit acts of valour during wartime. This award is awarded for most out-standing bravery or for some act of daring or greatest act of valour or self-sacrifice done in front of the enemy.

Following categories of persons are eligible for the Param Vir Chakra:

  1. Officers and men and women of all ranks of the Naval, Military and Air Forces, of any of the Reserve Forces, of the Territorial Army, Militia and of any other lawfully constituted Armed Forces.
  2. Matrons, Sisters, Nurses and the Staff of the Nursing Services and other Services pertaining to Hospitals and Nursing, and Civilians of either sex serving regularly or temporarily under the orders, directions or supervision of any of the above-mentioned Forces.

First recipient of Param Vir Chakra was Major Somnath Sharma.

9. Param Vishisht Seva Medal

The PVSM is a military award of India. It was established in 1960, since then till today , it is awarded in recognition for the peace-time service of the most exceptional order and may be awarded later. All individual of all ranks of the Indian Armed Forces including Territorial Army, Auxiliary and Reserve Forces, Nursing officers and other members of the Nursing services and other lawfully constituted Armed Forces are eligible for these award.

10. Vishisht Seva Medal

The VSM is a decoration of the Indian armed forces. It is awarded to recognize “distinguished service of a high order” to all ranks of the Indian Armed forces. Award was established on 26th January, 1960.

11. Shaurya chakra

The Shaurya Chakra award is an Indian military decoration which is awarded for valour, courageous action or self-sacrifice which indirectly engaged for action with the enemy. It may be awarded to civilians as well as military personnel, sometimes later. It is on third position of precedence of peacetime gallantry awards and which comes after the Ashoka Chakra and the Kirti Chakra. It precedes the Sena Medal award. It is established in 1952.

12. Vir Chakra

This award is an Indian gallantry award given for acts of gallantry in the presence of the enemy on the battlefield. It was established on 26th January, 1950 which was effective since 15th August, 1947. The first recipient of Vir Chakra were Subedar Nadikerianda Bheemaiah and 2nd Lieutenant R Kanikasamy for their bravery in Kashmir war.

13. Sena medal

          The Sena Medal award is awarded to members of the Indian army, of all ranks, to such an individual acts of exceptional dedication towards duty or courage as have special significance for the Army. This award was established on 17th June, 1960.
